The Goat Who Bargained for Her Life
Jataka Tales · 1 min read
A goat, grazing carelessly at the edge of the forest, was suddenly seized by a hungry tiger who declared he would eat her at once. Rather than struggle uselessly, the goat spoke calmly and asked for a single favor before she died: allow her to first deliver a bundle of fresh grass to an old, blind village elder who had fed and cared for her as an orphaned kid many years before, a debt of gratitude she had always meant to repay properly before the end.
The tiger, more curious than merciful, found the request strange enough to consider, and finally agreed on one condition: she must return to this exact spot by evening to be eaten, or he would hunt down and destroy her entire herd instead. The goat agreed without hesitation and hurried off toward the village.
Every other tiger who heard of the arrangement mocked him for such foolishness, certain the goat would never return once free. Yet as evening fell, the goat reappeared exactly as promised, grass duties fulfilled, walking calmly back toward the tiger to honor her word. The tiger, utterly astonished that any creature would voluntarily return to certain death purely out of integrity, found himself unable to eat her after witnessing such honesty, and instead let her go free, declaring himself changed by what he had seen — proof that genuine honesty, offered with nothing to gain from it, can move even the most predatory heart to mercy.
