The Elephant and the Little Stray Dog

Jataka Tales · 1 min read

A magnificent royal elephant, kept in the king's finest stable, formed an unlikely and deeply affectionate friendship with a small stray dog who had wandered in one day seeking scraps and never left, the two of them eating together, sleeping near each other, and playing daily despite the enormous difference in their size.

One day, a poor farmer visiting the palace admired the little dog and, not realizing its bond with the elephant, asked the stable keeper if he might have it, offering a small sum in exchange. The keeper, seeing no harm in parting with an ordinary stray, agreed and sent the dog home with the farmer, several miles away.

From that day on, the elephant refused to eat or drink anything at all, standing motionless and clearly grieving, growing visibly weaker despite every effort by his keepers to tempt him with his favorite foods. Word of the elephant's decline eventually reached the king himself, who, upon learning the cause, ordered the farmer found and the dog returned immediately. The moment the little dog came bounding back into the stable, the elephant's whole demeanor transformed instantly — he lifted his trunk in joy, ate heartily for the first time in days, and never again let the dog wander far from his side. The king, moved by what he had witnessed, decreed that the two should never be separated again, having learned that even the largest and most powerful of creatures can be brought low by the simple, quiet grief of losing a true friend.
