The Fox and the Grapes

Aesop's Fables · 1 min read

A hungry fox spotted a bunch of plump, ripe grapes hanging high on a vine and, mouth watering, leapt again and again to reach them. No matter how high he jumped, the grapes remained just beyond his grasp.

After many exhausted attempts, the fox finally gave up, panting, and walked away with his head held high. "Those grapes were probably sour anyway," he muttered to himself. "I didn't even want them."

Anyone watching could see plainly that the grapes were sweet and perfectly ripe — the fox simply could not admit, even to himself, that he had failed to reach something he genuinely wanted.

Moral of the story

It's easy to despise what you cannot have, rather than admit you simply failed to reach it.
