The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing

Aesop's Fables · 1 min read

A wolf, tired of failing to catch sheep through direct chasing, found a discarded sheepskin and cleverly disguised himself in it, slipping unnoticed into a flock grazing peacefully in a meadow, planning to pick off a lamb whenever the shepherd's guard was down.

The disguise worked perfectly, and for days the wolf moved freely among the sheep, biding his time, trusted completely by the flock and the shepherd alike, who suspected nothing at all.

That evening, the shepherd, needing meat for dinner, grabbed the nearest "sheep" without a second glance and killed it on the spot for the pot — only discovering, far too late for the wolf, that he had unknowingly slaughtered the very predator that had been hiding in his flock all along. The wolf's own clever disguise, meant to deceive the flock, ended up deceiving the shepherd into killing him by simple accident.

Moral of the story

A disguise that hides your true nature can just as easily hide you from those it was meant to protect you.
