The Traveling Companions
World Fairy Tales · 1 min read
A kind young man, setting out into the world with his small inheritance, gave away his money three separate times to strangers desperately in debt, unable to walk past genuine suffering without helping, until he had nothing left at all but the clothes on his back.
A quiet traveler joined him on the road, offering to share the journey and, mysteriously, seeming to know things no ordinary man should know — warning him away from a poisoned well, predicting a coming storm, correctly guessing riddles no one else could solve. The young man, though puzzled, trusted his strange companion completely, since his advice always proved true.
Through a series of dangerous trials at a nearby kingdom — solving impossible riddles set by a cursed princess, surviving tests meant to kill any ordinary suitor — the mysterious companion guided him safely through each one, ultimately winning the young man both the princess's hand and the breaking of her curse. Only afterward did the companion reveal himself as the spirit of a debtor the young man had once paid off, whose burial he had also once funded when others refused — his long-ago, forgotten generosity having quietly followed him the entire journey, repaid many times over by a debt he never even remembered creating.

Generosity given freely, even to strangers you'll never see again, can quietly follow and protect you for years.
