The Tortoise and the Hare

Aesop's Fables · 1 min read

A hare, proud of his speed, endlessly mocked a tortoise for being so slow. Tired of the taunting, the tortoise finally challenged him to a race, and, amused, the hare accepted at once.

At the starting line, the hare shot off so far ahead that he decided he had plenty of time to nap in the shade of a tree along the course before finishing. He fell fast asleep, confident no tortoise could possibly catch up.

The tortoise, plodding along steadily without ever stopping, passed the sleeping hare and crossed the finish line just as the hare woke and realized, in horror, that his lead was gone. He sprinted with all his might, but it was too late — the tortoise had already won.

Moral of the story

Slow and steady wins the race — consistent effort beats a burst of talent that grows careless.
