The Toothless Snake's Honest Bargain
Jataka Tales · 1 min read
An aging snake, having lost his venomous fangs entirely to age and no longer able to hunt as he once did, approached a frog living at the pond's edge with an unusual proposal: he would carry the frog safely across the water on his back whenever needed, protecting him from herons and other predators along the way, in exchange for the frog occasionally bringing him food from the far bank, since the snake could no longer catch it himself.
The frog, cautious at first given the snake's obvious history as a predator, eventually verified through careful observation over many weeks that the snake truly had no fangs left and posed no real danger, and the arrangement worked honestly and well for both of them for a long while, the frog genuinely grateful for safe passage and the snake genuinely grateful for reliable food.
One season, however, the frog noticed something troubling during a routine crossing: the snake's mouth, examined closely, showed the faint beginnings of new fangs slowly regrowing, a natural process neither of them had considered when they first struck their bargain. The frog now faced a genuine dilemma — the snake had been honest throughout their entire arrangement and had never once broken his word, but the very condition that had made the deal safe was quietly changing beneath them both. Rather than ending the friendship abruptly out of fear, the frog spoke to the snake honestly about what he'd noticed, and together they renegotiated fair terms for a changing situation, understanding that even a fully honest bargain needs revisiting when the facts underneath it change, not because trust was broken, but because circumstances were.
Moral of the story
Even a fully honest bargain needs revisiting when the underlying circumstances change, not because trust was broken, but because facts were.
