The Queen Bee's Memory

Three princes set out together on a journey, and the two eldest, careless and often cruel in small ways, destroyed an anthill just to watch the ants scatter in panic, tried to kill a pair of ducks swimming peacefully on a pond simply for sport, and knocked down a wild beehive to steal its honey without a second thought for the bees themselves. Their youngest brother, gentler by nature, stopped each time and convinced them to leave the creatures in peace instead, genuinely troubled by their careless cruelty.

Arriving at an enchanted castle where every living creature had been turned to stone by a curse, the brothers learned that breaking the spell required completing three seemingly impossible tasks before sunset: gathering a thousand scattered pearls hidden in the forest floor without missing a single one, retrieving a specific key from the bottom of a deep lake, and identifying the youngest of three identical sleeping princesses by nothing more than a single subtle clue.

The two elder brothers, having shown no kindness to any creature along the way, failed each task and were turned to stone themselves for their failure. The youngest brother, however, found unexpected help arriving exactly when needed: the very ants he had spared came in their thousands to gather every pearl correctly, the ducks he had saved dove down and retrieved the key from the lake's depths, and the queen bee from the hive he had protected, remembering his kindness, flew directly to land on the lips of the correct sleeping princess, identifying her from among three identical sisters. His small, unglamorous kindnesses along the road, extended to creatures his brothers dismissed as beneath their notice, turned out to be precisely what saved not only the princess and the whole cursed castle, but his own foolish brothers as well.
