The Quails Who Fell Apart

Jataka Tales · 1 min read

A large flock of quails, repeatedly caught in a hunter's net, was taught by their wise leader a clever trick: the moment the net fell over them, every single bird should push upward together at the same instant, lifting the whole net into the air and carrying it to a thicket where they could crawl free underneath and scatter.

The plan worked perfectly, again and again, and the frustrated hunter went weeks without a single catch, baffled at how his net kept vanishing into the trees only to be found empty each time.

But one evening, as they prepared to lift the net together as always, two quails who had quarreled earlier that day refused to cooperate — each blaming the other and flapping only for themselves out of spite. Without every wing pushing in unison, the net could not rise at all, and the entire flock was caught together, undone not by the hunter's skill, but by their own broken teamwork.

Moral of the story

Teamwork can lift what no single member could ever carry alone — and one broken bond can bring it all crashing down.
