The Quail Chick's Truthful Words
Jataka Tales · 1 min read
A baby quail, still featherless and unable to fly, lived with his parents in a nest at the edge of a great forest. One dry season, a fierce fire swept through the woods, and his parents flew off in panic to save themselves, leaving the chick alone and utterly helpless as the flames roared closer.
Unable to run or fly, the little quail did the only thing left to him: he called upon the power of truth itself. "There are wings that cannot fly, and feet that cannot walk, and my parents have left me. O fire, turn back!" he declared with complete sincerity, reflecting honestly on his own helplessness rather than pretending to a strength he didn't have, and affirming the ancient power said to reside in any statement spoken with total truthfulness.
Remarkably, the wall of flame halted abruptly just short of the nest, curling back on itself as if it had struck an invisible wall, sparing the chick and the small patch of forest around him entirely. The other animals who witnessed it never forgot the lesson: complete honesty, spoken without pretense or exaggeration, carries a quiet power that bluster and boasting never can.
