The Pot That Granted Every Wish

Vikram-Betaal Stories · 1 min read

A poor farmer, digging in his field, unearthed an ancient clay pot that, to his astonishment, produced whatever he asked of it — food when he was hungry, gold when he needed money, fine cloth when his family had none. Within a year, his household transformed from the poorest in the village to among the wealthiest, and word of his sudden fortune spread.

A greedy relative, visiting under the pretense of celebrating his good luck, grew consumed with envy and, during a heated argument over how the wealth should be shared with the wider family, shouted in fury that he wished the farmer's entire fortune would simply vanish along with the accursed pot that had spoiled everyone's peace.

The pot, hearing the wish spoken aloud within its presence, granted it instantly and without judgment — gold, cloth, and pot alike vanishing in a single moment, leaving the farmer exactly as poor as he had been before he ever found it. The farmer, rebuilding his life slowly afterward, took from the disaster a lesson he never forgot: a gift with no limits is only as safe as the words spoken carelessly around it.

Moral of the story

A boundless gift is only as safe as the words spoken carelessly in its presence.
