The Merchant's Two Apprentices

Jataka Tales · 1 min read

A wealthy merchant, known throughout the region for his honesty as much as his fortune, took on two young apprentices at the same time, teaching them both the exact same trade secrets, the exact same negotiating skills, and the exact same accounting methods.

One apprentice absorbed the technical skills eagerly but quietly began cutting corners on honesty whenever a shortcut seemed profitable, believing skill alone would carry him. The other apprentice absorbed the same skills but also paid close attention to the merchant's quieter habits — always paying suppliers fairly and promptly, always admitting his own mistakes openly, always refusing a profitable deal that required deceiving someone.

Years later, both had opened their own trading houses. The dishonest apprentice built quick profits at first, but his reputation soured as cheated partners spread word of his tricks, and his business collapsed within a decade. The honest apprentice grew slowly but steadily, trusted by everyone who dealt with him, and eventually became wealthier and more respected than his old master had ever been — having learned not just the trade, but the true foundation it was built on.

Moral of the story

Skill alone builds fast profit; honesty builds fortune that actually lasts.
