The Merchant Who Sold His Voice
Vikram-Betaal Stories · 1 min read
A struggling merchant, blessed with a beautiful singing voice but cursed with poor business sense, met a wandering sage who offered him a strange bargain: perfect success in trade and endless wealth, in exchange for his singing voice, which he would lose forever.
Desperate for prosperity, the merchant agreed. His business flourished beyond anything he'd imagined, and within years he became one of the wealthiest men in the region — but he could no longer sing even a single note, his voice reduced to a flat, toneless whisper whenever he tried.
Years later, his own daughter, preparing for her wedding, wept that her father — once famous throughout the village for singing at every celebration — could not sing at her ceremony as he always dreamed he would. Watching her disappointment, the merchant realized for the first time what he had truly traded away: not just a voice, but every future moment of joy that voice might have shared with those he loved. His wealth, however vast, had bought him comfort but had quietly stolen something no gold could ever buy back.
Moral of the story
Some things traded away for wealth cannot be measured until years later, when their true cost finally reveals itself.
