The King's Strange Dream

Akbar-Birbal Stories · 1 min read

Emperor Akbar woke one morning deeply shaken by a strange dream: he had seen every one of his own teeth fall out, save a single tooth remaining in his mouth. Troubled, he summoned his astrologers at once to interpret the omen.

The astrologers, after grave consultation, delivered devastating news: the dream meant that every member of the emperor's family — every relative, every child — would die before him, leaving him alone, the "single remaining tooth," at the very end. Akbar, horrified, could barely speak for the rest of the day.

Birbal, hearing of the interpretation later, asked to see the astrologers dismissed and offered his own reading instead. "Your Majesty," he said gently, "I read the very same dream quite differently. It means that of your entire family and lineage, you alone will outlive every one of them — a sign not of loss, but of a long, unmatched life, the last standing among all your kin."

The meaning of the dream had not changed one letter — only the frame around it had — and Akbar, hearing it phrased this way, felt his dread lift entirely, rewarding Birbal generously for turning the very same fact into hope instead of despair.

Moral of the story

The same fact, framed with wisdom instead of fear, can become a comfort instead of a curse.
