The Guest Who Stayed Too Long

Tenali Raman Stories · 1 min read

A distant relative visited Tenali Raman's home for what was meant to be a short stay, but showed no sign of leaving after weeks, then months, comfortably settling in and treating the household's hospitality as his permanent right, oblivious to every gentle hint that it was time to go.

Rather than confront him directly and risk seeming inhospitable, Tenali Raman began, each morning, to loudly announce elaborate, joyful preparations for the guest's upcoming "farewell feast" — inviting neighbors, describing the grand meal he was planning, and speaking as though the guest's departure were already a settled, celebrated fact everyone in town was looking forward to.

The relative, cornered by the sheer public momentum of a farewell he'd never actually agreed to, found himself unable to simply stay on afterward without appearing rude in front of an entire town who now expected him to leave with fanfare. He departed the very next week, thoroughly fed and warmly celebrated — precisely as Tenali Raman had intended all along, having found a way to end an overstayed visit with warmth instead of insult.

Moral of the story

An awkward situation is often best resolved with cleverness and warmth rather than blunt confrontation.
