The Girl Who Trod on a Loaf

World Fairy Tales · 1 min read

A beautiful but deeply vain girl, sent by her mother to deliver bread to a sick relative in a neighboring village, came upon a muddy stretch of path and, unwilling to risk dirtying her fine new shoes, threw the loaf of bread down into the mud to use as a stepping stone rather than simply carrying it carefully around.

The moment her foot touched the loaf, it sank beneath her into the earth, dragging her down into a strange, dark underworld far below the surface, where a witch-like figure kept her trapped for her cruel disrespect of good food that others desperately needed, while people who had watched her act reported that from that day, she was never seen again in her usual carefree, careless form.

The tale was told to children as a stark warning against vanity so consuming that it would sacrifice something as basic and precious as bread — meant to nourish a sick relative — merely to keep a pair of shoes spotless, a small cruelty and carelessness that revealed, in one thoughtless act, a character deeply out of balance with what truly mattered.

Moral of the story

Vanity that disrespects something as basic as the food meant to nourish others reveals a deeply unbalanced character.
