The Elves and the Shoemaker

World Fairy Tales · 1 min read

A poor but honest shoemaker, down to his last piece of leather and unsure how he would feed his family through the winter, cut the leather carefully one evening, intending to sew it into shoes the next morning, then went to bed exhausted and worried.

Waking early, he found, to his astonishment, a beautifully finished pair of shoes already waiting on his workbench, sewn more perfectly than he could ever have managed himself. He sold them that very day for an excellent price, enough to buy leather for two more pairs — and again the next morning found them finished, flawless, and waiting.

This continued night after night until the shoemaker, now prosperous, and his wife decided to stay awake and discover their secret helpers. They found two tiny, ragged elves working tirelessly through the night, and, moved by gratitude, sewed them each a small set of fine clothes as thanks, laid out instead of leather the next evening. Delighted with their new clothes, the elves danced off into the night and never returned — but the shoemaker, having learned his trade well by then and built a loyal reputation, no longer needed their help to prosper.

Unexpected help deserves genuine gratitude, given in whatever way honors the helper.
