The Dog in the Manger

Aesop's Fables · 1 min read

A dog, looking for a warm place to nap, curled up in a manger filled with soft hay. Before long, a hungry ox approached, eager to eat the hay he actually needed, but the dog growled and snapped fiercely at him, refusing to let him near.

"Why do you guard hay you cannot even eat yourself?" the ox asked, baffled. "It does you no good at all, and it would feed me well."

The dog had no real answer — he simply did not want the ox to have something he himself had no use for. The ox, unable to reason with such stubbornness, walked away hungry, while the dog lay uselessly atop hay that fed no one at all.

Moral of the story

Denying others something you cannot use yourself helps no one, least of all you.
