The Camel Merchant's Ungrateful Partner
Hitopadesha Stories · 1 min read
Two merchants had built a caravan trading business together for years, one gifted at negotiating prices, the other skilled at managing routes and logistics. When a bad season nearly bankrupted the logistics partner through no fault of his own, the negotiating partner covered his debts entirely from his own personal savings, asking only that they continue as equal partners once things recovered.
The business did recover, growing more profitable than ever within a few years. But the once-struggling partner, now confident and no longer needing help, began quietly redirecting the best deals to a new, secret partnership of his own, using knowledge and connections he had only gained through the very partnership his friend had once saved.
When the betrayal was finally discovered, the wronged partner brought the matter before a respected elder for judgment. The elder ruled firmly in his favor, remarking to the entire trading community: "A debt of survival is the heaviest debt there is, precisely because it can never be fully repaid — and a man who forgets that the moment he no longer needs the hand that saved him reveals a character no future partnership should ever trust again."
Moral of the story
A debt of survival can never be fully repaid — forgetting it the moment you no longer need help reveals true character.
