PDF vs Flipbook: When a Page-Turn Actually Helps

A flipbook shines for anything meant to be browsed cover-to-cover: catalogs, magazines, annual reports, portfolios. The page-turn interaction mimics a familiar physical object and encourages skimming through, which is exactly the behavior a catalog wants.

It's the wrong choice for reference documents people search rather than browse — a tax form or a manual is better served by a plain, searchable PDF viewer. Forcing a page-turn interaction onto a lookup document just adds friction between the reader and the one fact they need.

If you're unsure, ask how the document is actually used today. If people currently flip through a printed copy, a flipbook replicates that experience online. If they currently Ctrl+F a PDF, don't take that away from them.
